I just bought a Dell machine that has XP but I can't tell
if it is activated. I don't get any popups in the bottom
right or anything to tell me to activate it. Is there
anyway to make sure it is activated?

Any Help is Appreciated

Open XP's "Help and Support" and type: ACTIVATION , and hit enter.
Click on the article titled: "Understanding activation and registration".

Most computers with Windows XP preinstalled at the factory do not
require Product Activation since their restore XP CD will not work on any
computer other than the one it came with.

Dells don't require activation. I have two.

To verify click start, run type in msoobe /a

Hi,

Most preinstalled machines are activated before shipping. But, if you
start/run this command, it should tell you if you are already activated:

%SYSTEMROOT%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /A

If you bought a new computer from Dell, it is activated.

Greetings --

Pre-installed OEM operating systems are typically either
pre-activated at the factory or are BIOS-locked and do not required
activation as long as they're installed on the computer with which
they're sold.

The OS will let you know, with frequent reminders, if you do need
to activate. To check for yourself, Start > All Programs >
Accessories > System Tools > Activate Windows. Alternatively, Start >
Run > "C:\Windows\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /A." It will probably tell
you that WinXP has already been activated.

On my XP Professional retail full version, all I have to do is go to the start
menu, find and click on Activate and it tells me it's already activated.
