Hi,

I believe that the ICS on my XP por host computer is not working, the
reason being that ive newly installed XP pro onto my client, and also
that when i use a proxy program on the host, i can access the net on
the client.

Also, i can file share between the two computers fine.

Does anyone have an idea what's wrong? How do you reset all settings
with ICS etc?

Regards

I'm not at all sure why you conclude it is not working, not sure what
you mean by using a "proxy program" (proxy for what?) on the "host"
(what host?). If you mean you are logged into another machine and from
that machine you can use your XP Pro machine as a gateway back into the
internet ... well, I think that means ICS is working since that is what
ICS does

Suggest you re-read the instructions about ICS (Internet Connection
Sharing) in Windows "Help". Search for "ICS" and it will describe the
available settings you seek.

I called my desktop the host...

My desktop connects straight to the net. My laptop uses the desktop as
a gateway to the net, using a cross over cable.

I've tried everything, ive set up home network with XP's wizard, and
i've set it up manually setting ip's but nothing worked. So yes i've
looked it up as much as i could.

I download a program that set my desktop top up, so on my laptop i
could tell IE to go throught a proxy - that proxy being my desktop's
ip. This method worked, and as far as im aware this is independent of
ICS.

If it's not, then why would ICS not work without using this proxy
method? I've also reinstalled the adapter that uses ICS but it still
doesnt work.

Arun,

Do you have ZoneAlarm or any other firewall installed? If so, you may want
to add the client's IP to the Trusted Zone. To test with, disable
third-party firewalls and it's related services. Visit
www.practicallynetworked.com [MVP Steve Winograd] for ICS troubleshooting
and tips.

I've got as far as uninstalling all my firewalls, including the one
built into XP networking, but it still doesnt work...

I've looked at practicallynetworked b4.

Having said this, when trying to sign in on the laptop into msn
messenger, it says im behind a firewall, which im confused about.

The best solution is to quit using Microsoft's Internet Crappy Sharing
(ICS) software, and spend about $50 (or less with rebates) on a
Cable/DSL router. Then both machines can easily access the net
without depending on the "host" being turned on. The router sets up
everything you need, very easily.

Now, if you are using dialup, then this won't work and I'm sorry that
you have to use that ICS crap. It will give you nothing but
headaches.
