As I understand it I can take an existing install and
migrate it and all of the associated programs to a new
drive. In my case I have a 20Gb drive and I am out of
room. I have purchased a 160Gb drive and don't want to
have to re-install every thing. I have looked in Help for
a couple of days and I can not find anything about this.
Thank you.

The 160 gb drive may have a program to do this or else you need imaging
software. In xp there is the files and settings transfer wizard but that
still requires you to reinstall xp and programs. To not reinstall you need a
third party app. Most new drives come with such a program.

You could always try formatting the new drive with 2
partiions backup the 20GB using Microsoft backup and
Automated System Recovery, then take the 20Gig HD out and
use ASR to restore to the priamary partion on the 160Gig
drive.

I always have at least 2 partions on my machines one for
windows/programs and the other for documents/emails etc.
That way if your forced to reinstall you dont have too
try and get your data off the main partition.

Thank you. I thought about that but the problem is that
I have so many programs on the 20Gb drive now that I can't
install more. I was wondering about using Ghost? I think I
am going to download the trial version and see if that
will work.
Again, Thank you for your assistance.

Thank you for your suggestion.
I think I am going to download the trial version of
Ghost and see if I can get that to work.
Again, Thank you.

If you want to move your entire installation to a new drive with
reinstalling everything, there is no way within Windows to do so.

However there is third-party software available that has this
capability. Sometimes such software comes with drives you buy,
but if yours didn't come with it, two products you can buy are
Norton Ghost and PowerQuest Drive Image.

And maybe one more alternative for you which I recently found out from
buying a new Seagate HDD.

Their web site provide a software called DiskWizard will help you to move
data from the old hard disk to the new one.

According to their technical support, most of applications will not need to
install except some MS applications. I did not use it since I was in a
different situation. But you can try it.

Also, their technical support recommend the software is to be used with
Seagate hard disc - understandable - but guess it's not necessary.

PS: Be careful with Ghost, it is not very user-friendly for fresh hand
although it is powerful. In my case, I failed on the first try to messed up
with source and destination drive which --- you could image the outcome
