I can't get to the windows update page. I'm using windows
XP home edition. I tried to run "regedit" HKEY_LOCAL
MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows current
version\windows update. Edited permissions to add
everyone, checked names, gave full control, set "no deny"
to all and changed child values to parent values.
I am logged on as an administrator by default, since no
one else uses this pc. even so, when prompted for which
user should access this program, I input my user name and
password. This has not helped at all. I still get the "!
Administrators only" page when I try to go to updates.
Any ideas as to what's going on? I religiously update all
the critical updates.I have windows update set to notify
when updates are available. Will the auto updates now be
unavailable?? Or has the latest update I downloaded done
something to conflict?

Lou;
Try these:
Check Date/Time
Disable firewall
Try this (Windows XP):
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;326815
Don't forget steps 6-9 catroot2 file.
Do this whether SP1 is the issue or not.
Go to Internet Options in the Control Panel:
Delete Cookies
Delete Files (check box "Delete all offline content")
Clear History
If you use AOL, minimize AOL and open Internet Explorer and try
Windows Update
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/
Follow this:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/
Look for "When trying to use the Windows Update Web..."
Otherwise see if another option on the troubleshooter will resolve the
issue.

OK, I tried all of that and it didn't help but,I found
that when I go to the control panel theres a windows
update option in the left hand pane. I tried it and
voila, I was able to access the update page. Very strange
indeed. Thanx for your help tho. I appreciate it. :)
