to retrieve your desktop icons:
1) right click on any empty area of your desktop
2) left click on "arrange" icons (which brings up another lil window)
3) go down list to "display" (or show) icons & left click
4) viola!

There seems to be many threads lately with the same problem. Note that we have the same problem on one of ourmachines in my house here. Note also that you CAN boot in Safe mode and have all of your icons. I tried suggestions to create new user accounts,
but that did no good at all. It seems like a perfectly functional operating system, except there's no icons, no task bar, no start menu, and right clicking on the blank screen shows nothing. Also curious: I have the original background on the screen.

What in the world could cause this type of problem?

Hi Georgia,

Those symptoms can be corrected via this small utility:

My Desktop icons vanish when I connect with internet. Anybody know how I can keep them in place? Thank you.

Also...they automatically reappear when I sign off internet. Thanks.
