View Full Version : windows automatic loadup

January 6th 04, 06:55 PM
Hello.

I just formatted my hard drive and reinstalled windows
xp. Unfortunately windows no longer loads up
automatically. I think it is because I am missing a
command in the config.sys file or the autoexec.bat file.
Now I have to manually select my computer to load
windows. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

It's the boot.ini file. Edit out the extar lines. It should look like this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect

Hey thanks. I just want to check before I change
things. I checked out my boot.ini file and it is:

[Boot Loader]
timeout=5
default=C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft
Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect
C:\ = "Microsoft Windows"
C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT = "Windows XP
Installation/Upgrade"

Now I noticed my timeout is 5 where your's is 30. Does
this have to be changed too? Then, I am guessing I have
to change the default to look like yours, as well as omit
the last two command lines in my file. Is that all
correct? :) I just don't want to screw up again :)

The timeout is fine, it can be set to whatever you like, I think 30 seconds
is the default.
Yes change your default= line and get rid of the last two lines.
This is also assuming you have windows installed in the default c:\windows
folder. And yours needs to read partition(1) were applicable. Mine says
partition(2) cause xp is installed on second partition.

Thanks again, one last question though, my computer won't
let me change the boot.ini file. It keeps telling me it
is a read only file. Even when I load up off a windows
98 startup disk it still won't let me. How do I avoid
this?

Edit it this way:
right click my computer, properties, advanced tab, startup and recovery
area-settings button, edit button.
