I have to backup several computers so that the hard drive can easily be reloaded
when someone messes them up. Right now I use norton ghost to create images of
the hard drives, but this is taking a lot of cds, because there is a lot of
stuff on some of the computers that doesn't need backing up.

Does anyone know of any backup software that allows you to create bootable
restore cds (with no need to reinstall windows first) like ghost can, but also
able to exclude certain directories and files (paging file, 10GB mp3 collection
of ripped cds, etc)?

Hi Grant, Ghost will allow you to exclude files and folders.

at the price that hardrives are know in my book it is a
waste to use cds. I bought a second hardrive and then
use a backup software to backup to the hardrive. Takes
less time and in no time you have paid for the second
hardrive in what cds would cost. Also with cds you have
a better chance of them not working.

Do you remember how...I never saw an option to do that.

Hi:

Agree with a second hard disc with current price.

I use 80G for the primary drive and a 120G for the slave as the backup.
I do synchronize folders consistently with a software called - Sychromagic
Pro, in addition to use Windows XP Backup to create backup files.

However, both methods are good for data files but not necessary for the
entire system files.

The problem is that I have about 6 computers I need to backup, which means:

a) buying backup 6 hard drives. actually 12, since we want two copies (one
stored in a different location)
b) buying 2-4 huge hard drives and swaping them in and out all the time
or
c) buying 2-4 huge external hard drives and moving them around all the time.

Since all the computer's have cd burners, I want to stick to cds for now.

Understood.

But many backup software including the one I use can support remote location
if it's in the same network.

That means you can point your source drive, via network, to two different
locations for backup and/or synchronize data.

The advantage of CDs is cost and portability. But DVD
burners are getting much less expensive and can store 4.7 GB
which is helpful.

But any backup which is inside the computer or even the same
building is not adequate for important backup, fire, flood
or theft will take all you data.

There are external hard drives you can take with you and
store off site and there are reasonably priced on-line
storage/backup services. If you are a business they are
certainly worthwhile and are a very good idea.

That's my main reason for using CDs. I keep the drive images in the same
building -- they are useless unless installed on the same hardware. But the
documents are all backed with 2 copies, one locally, and one copy in another
building.

I use an external USB 2.0 Hard drive for backing up weekly, allows me to
keep my 2 main hard drives on the ide channel and also allows me to remove
the backup to a different location as well.

I do that too for my notebook at office and bring it home for synchro and/or
backup.
Very easy and convenient.
