Is it true that the only way to stop junk popups through
Windows Messenger is to physically unplug my computer
from the phone line ?
Fix it, microsoft.

let me get this straight - your response to a serious
microsoft security gap that leaves half the world's
computers at risk of having their drives wiped is that
every individual on the planet should install a spurious
firewall that stops everything from working, rather than
simply get microsoft to fix their software ?
who's the "half-a-brain" ?!

Nothing needs to be fixed.
This is not a security hole unless you choose to leave it open.
You can choose to use the Windows XP firewall, or choose to use a 3rd
party firewall.
However if you choose to use no firewall you choose to accept the
effects of an unprotected computer.
A firewall including ICF does NOT "stops everything from working", at
least if you configure it to your needs.
Generally the ICF needs no configuring, however many people choose
different applications and hardware and some of those choices create
different needs.

What do you choose to do?
We shall see!

Surely anyone who uses the Internnt should use a Firewall
and Anti-Virus Software - if not then one is open to far
worse things than Spam! - and since when do properly
configured Firewalls 'stop everything from working'?

Someone who believes that the appearance of unwanted Messenger popups is "a
serious security gap that leaves computers at risk of having their drives
wiped".
The security gap, if there is one, is that the user is unaware that there is
a valid need to be operating behind a firewall.
