View Full Version : Dragging files causes ownership to blank out: "access denied"

For a while now I've had this problem where files spontaneously become
inaccessable, as though there is an exclusive lock on them. When I
learned that there weren't any processes that had these files open, I
discovered that booting in safe mode allowed me to set the permissions
and ownership and such correctly. I'm pretty sure now that this
problem is caused by drag-and-dropping files and folders, since it
very consistently conincides w/these access denied problems.
I have XPHESP1, which is why I have to boot in safe mode everytime
I have this problem. That is not an acceptable solution. I have all
the patches at WindowsUpdate so far. I've also searched the groups for
this problem, and it seems common enough, but the solutions aren't
very clear, or don't include much beyond correcting the problem after
it has already happened. How do I stop dragging from screwing with the
ownership?

Please provide more information.

You say Ownership, but you speak about permissions.
These are two different things.
Are both being changed, or is it only that the permissions=20
are being changed ?

Next, you need to provide specific, precise examples of=20
dragging, _from_where_ and _to_where_.

The behavior of permission on a move is different when=20
a partition is crossed compared to when one is not.

Finally, I just assumed that when you have said dragging=20
you meant moving rather than copying.

You should be aware that copying will always cause the=20
copied to take on the permissions of the copied-to location.
This is not always the case when moving. If a move is=20
inside a partition the resulting permissions will be a mixture=20
combining the non-inherited (explicit) permissions that were=20
on what was moved together with the inheritable permissions=20
of the moved-to location.

To avoid the whole issue, when "dragging" inside a partition=20
you a copy and then delete what was copied.=20
