I am using XP Home on a fast PC. Once in a while, when it shut down, it
goes to the screen "Windows is shutting down" and just stays there. It only
happens once in a while and is therefore not a big deal, but I wondered why
it happens and maybe I can avoid it.

When that happens, it means that some program or service is not exiting
gracefully. You just have to Sherlock which one is hanging by looking
in Task Manager or Event Viewer. Here is a link to a great shutdown
troubleshooter:

Hi Jeff,

This edit automatically ends tasks and timeouts that prevent programs from
shutting down and clears the Paging File on Exit.

Thanks. Any difference between them?

And, while I have your attention, which of your tweaks is the correct one to
use to solve the problem of icons sometimes disappearing from the taskbar in
XP home?

Thanks again.
