A good friend just put XP on their computer and they want
to use the old Microsoft Outlook, instead of Outlook
Express, that comes with XP. Could someone tell me how
this can be done? Thanks so much, Susan

"Old outlook"? Not sure what you mean by that. Outlooks current version is
2003. To use outlook on xp you need to purchase it and install it. It works
fine.

I use Outlook AND Outlook Express on WinXP. Outlook Express does not replace
Outlook - they are two different products. I use OE a a newsgroup reader and
Outlook for email. They work ok together. For example I can click "reply" in
OE and Outlook will create a new email message.

Your friend needs to check if the version of Outlook that he has is
compatible with WinXP. Then he just installs it like any other MS Office
program.

When it's installed he may need to configure his computer so that Outlook is
the default email program - otherwise when he tries to email a reply to a
newsgroup posting he may find that OE generates the reply message. He will
also need to set up Outlook to suit he email and internet connection
(although I wouldn't be surprised if there was a wizard to do this when it's
installed ir used for the first time).

Need to buy a copy of Outlook, or Microsoft Office, and then install it.

"Old" Microsoft Outlook? I'm not sure what you mean by "old," but
he can use Outlook by simply buying and installing it.

Despite the similarity of their names, Outlook and Outlook
Express are two very different programs. This is a frequent
source of confusion and, in my view, Microsoft did us all a
disservice by giving such similar names to two such dissimilar
programs.

Outlook is a Personal Information Manager, including Calendar,
Task List, Contact Manager, Notes, Journal, etc. It also does
E-mail.

Outlook Express is an Email client and newsreader. It has no
Personal Information Manager capability. The capabilities of the
two overlap only in a single area--E-mail.

By the way, he should be aware that if wants to use Outlook for
reading newsgroups, Outlook does not have the ability to do this.
By default Outlook uses Outlook Express as its newsreader, but
one can use any newsreader refereed.
