moving files from me to xp pro

I have a new machine with xp pro. When I copied text
files (works word processor) from my old machine to xp
the folders names can be read but the text within the file
folder seems to be in code. A window suggested I select
a program on which to run. I was given several choices but
to no avail. Also going to the net didn't work.
Suggestions please?

If you created documents in works, then you need works to open them, or they
needed to be saved into a format that notepad or wordpad can read like .txt
files. If they are actual works documents then you need works. Intall it
from your cd's or if it came as a preinstalled bonus program and you have no
cd for it, then you'll have to buy it.
