Hope I don't boar/bore y'all with this Q. How do I
get "Spell Check" to work? I have tried using Gateway
techs four seperate times, the last time the guy had me
download another Microsoft Works????? It didn't. I have
done the "Tools/Options" thing -- there is no button to
turn on spell check. When I go into a new message, spell
check is 'up there' but it's not colored and it won't
highlight -- it just sits there.
HELP!

From Outlook Express help index..........

Outlook Express uses the spelling checker provided with the following
Microsoft Office programs: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft
PowerPoint. If you do not have one of these programs installed, the Spelling
command is not available.

Neither Windows XP, nor any other version of Windows, has ever
come with a Spell Checking facility. Outlook Express uses the
spell checker that comes with Microsoft Word, (or another
Microsoft Office program) if you have it installed.

If you don't have Word or Office installed, you probably don't
have a spell checker. However there are several downloadable
freeware/shareware alternative spell checkers that work with
Outlook Express and Outlook. Since I have no personal experience
with any of these, I'll let someone else recommend one.

On the other hand, if a Microsoft Office component *is*
installed, try the instructions at

Greetings --

Outlook Express, as you've just discovered, has no spell-checking
capabilities of its own. Instead, it relies upon the presence of
certain specific other Microsoft applications, such as the Office
Suite, Word, or the Works _Suite_ (which includes Word, not the
regular Works). There are also some 3rd-party shareware/freeware
solutions available at any of the many shareware sites on the Internet

Spell Magic seems well thought-of, though I haven't tried it myself:
