hello to all,
i have windows XP home edition. i cannot change the
attributes on my folders-- whether i create the folders or
they're created by a program. my 'read-only' box is always
checked with a grey backing. i have tried, Numerous Times,
to 'Uncheck this box, Apply and OK' yet the box remains
checked. yesterday, after encountering one too
many 'denied access' errors i phoned my computer help line
and the tech support operator told me it was a hard drive
eroor and the only way to fix it was to reformat/install
my entire computer. So I Spent The Entire Day Doing This
only to have my read-only box remain checked. can someone
help me with this please! thank you

Hi Sally,
The grey read-only checkbox indicates that it is neither checked or
unchecked. This is because on a NTFS drive each user on the computer has
their own set of permissions for this folder. One of these permissions is
the ability to write. Only on a Fat or FAT32 drive would the read only
attribute be used. For more information about file permissions, read
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article:
HOW TO: Set, View, Change, or Remove File and Folder Permissions in Windows
XP (Q308418)

First, send your tech support a bill for you time, which=20
they totally wasted through their lack of knowledge.
Access denied will result from NTFS permission not=20
granting the type of access being requested.
The "read-only" checkbox on folders is only a switch=20
for setting/unsetting the attribute on contained files.
If you wish to view/set the attribute on folders you=20
must use the old DOS attrib command.
