Every time I turn my computer a message pops up that
says, "MSSvc.EXE has encountered a problem and needs to
close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." When I click
on "To see what data this error report contains," I
get "Error signature szAppName:MSSvc.exe szAppVer:
0.0.0.0 szModName: unknown sz ModVer:0.0.0.0
offset:00000000." When I then click on "To view
technical information about the error report," I get
C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER2.tmp.dir00
\MSSvc.EXE.mdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER2.tmp.dir00
\appcompat.txt

After I close the last screen the computer seems to work
OK but I wonder why I get the error message and what
unknown effect it might be having on my computer. I
occasionally have other problems such as not being able
to get into my Disk Defragmenter. When I try, I get the
message, "Windows cannot access the specified device,
path or file. You may not have the appropriate
permissions to access the item." This is a home computer.
I am not on a network and when I check "User Accounts" on
my Control Panel it seems I am shown as the Owner -
Computer Administrator.

I have a HP 7955 with 256 Mb Ram and Home Edition Windows
XP.
Please help. Thanks.

Thanks Chris. I took your advice and sent the entire
message to Tucows but it didn't work. Here is their reply.

"William,
This is not related to any of our products.
mssvc is used for file hiding and encryption so this
could explain your file problems. Try the Microsoft
support site and try updating mssvc or related services.

Regards,
Emil"

Go to this web address:

http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/mssvc/

It says it's a program, so try removing it.
