View Full Version : Is there a VIRUS in jdbgmgr.exe ??

Paul
December 5th 03, 07:58 PM
I got a virus alert via email from a friend, referring to
the subject application file (text below), and found the
file in my WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 folder. The file has the
following descriptors:
Description: Microsoft (R) Debugger Registrar for Java
Company: Microsoft Corporation
File Version: 5.0.3810.0
Date Created: 4/11/2003 9:33 AM
Size: 14.7 KB

On the same "created" date, there are many other
application files in the same folder, presumably
downloaded from Microsoft because I subscribe to
the "Automatic Update" service.

QUESTION #1: Am I being naive thinking that
these "automatic upgrades" are indeed from Microsoft?

QUESTION #2: Is the particular file in question trouble?

Thanks all,
Paul

TEXT OF EMAIL NOTIFYING ME OF A VIRUS
*************************************
A virus is being passed from address book to address book
without people knowing it. It was passed on to me by some
contact in my address book and my address book WAS
infected.

Since you are in my address book, there is a good chance
you will find it in your computer too. The virus (called
jdbgmgr.exe) is not detected by Norton or McAfee
antivirus systems. The virus sits quietly for 14 days
before damaging the system. IT IS SENT AUTOMATICALLY BY
MESSENGER AND BY THE ADDRESS BOOK WHETHER OR NOT YOU SENT
E-MAIL TO YOUR CONTACTS.

It's very possible your address book may already have the
virus since we all have so many cross-contacts.

Don't be alarmed. It is easy to eradicate - but you MUST
take the following action and send instructions on to
everyone in your address book.

Here's how to check for the virus and how to get rid of
it:

YOU MUST DO THIS.

1. Go to start, Find or search option.

2. In the file folder option, type the name jdbgmgr.exe

3. Be sure you search your C: drive and all subfolders
and any other drives you may have.

4. Click "find now"

5. The Virus has a Teddy Bear icon with the name
jdbgmgr.exe DO NOT OPEN IT! ! ! !

6. Go to Edit (on the menu bar) and choose "select all"
to highlight the file without opening it.

7. Now go to File (on the menu bar) and select delete. It
will then go to the Recycle Bin.

8. IF YOU FIND THE VIRUS YOU MUST CONTACT ALL THE PEOPLE
IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK, SO THEY CAN ERADICATE IT IN THEIR
OWN ADDRESS BOOKS.

It's a hoax. The jdbgmgr.exe file is fine, leave it alone and ignore the
e-mail.

This is a hoax. It is not a virus, although the doggone thing seems to
resurface every few months. I just looked
for it, aka 'Teddy Bear Virus' in Yahoo seach and got 18000 hits.
