I am a disabled vet and have just purchased a new (refurbished) computer
from HP. It comes with WinXP Home edition. The computer I have right now
has WinXP Pro.
My question is this, can I install WinXP Pro *over* WinXP Home edition with
out any problems? Or do I need toformat the HD?
I am a bit computer savy, but not a genius, so if you could help me with
this I would really appreciate it!
Many thanks!!

Just insert the XP Pro CD, boot, and follow instructions (making choices
along the way). Shouldn't be a problem. Don't have to reformat the HD
(one of the options you'll choose). Read the paper instructions that
came with the CD.

How important is it to have the paper instructions? I*may* still have it,
but not sure...? Will have to search it out...
Thanks so much for the quick response!

In general, yes you can install XP Pro as an upgrade over XP Home with no
problems. There may be some licensing issues that you need to be aware of.
If the XP Pro is an OEM version that came with the computer hardware then
that license cannot be transferred to a new computer. Additionally the OEM
version can not be used to install as an upgrade.
On the other hand if the XP Pro license is for the retail product then you
can transfer that to a new computer. To be within the license you will
want to uninstall from the current computer then install as an upgrade on
the new computer. If you have any problems with activation not working
automatically over the internet at the end of the Pro install, just choose
the option to activate by phone and let them know your need to transfer the
license to the new computer.

Hi,
Pro can be installed over Home, however you need a regular retail copy (full
or upgrade) that is not currently in use on another machine.
