I attempted to install sp1 yesterday with no luck at all,
so I rolled back the installation. In doing this the
machine would not boot, it appears that a few files were
not restored (lsass.exe). After coping this file the
machine appears to boot fine, I just cannot get sp1 to
install. It looks to be comparing inventory, then a memory
reference error occurs. Any ideas on ways around this? I
have downloaded the full network installation. I have a
feeling the machine is in limbo not sure if it is SP1 or
prior, maybe some of both.

Post the exact error message, xp version, and machine specs.

The exact error is a memory refernce error in update.exe.
I will try to get a screen shot of the error message if
needed. It looks to be
XP Home edition
version 5.1.2600 Build 2600
256 Meg, 2.0 gHz
Dell Optiplex 8200.
There does not appear to be much else installed update
wise, there are 46 or so things queued to be installled.
I also cannot use system restore, there was only 1 restore
point from this morning whicj is useless.

Make sure you don't have any viruses.
Try a sfc /scannow at the run line. Have xp cd handy.
See if this helps you:

I dont think I have any viruses but will double check. I
will also see if anything in that link helps. Do you know
of any way to force a repair (keep existing files)?
BTW Thanks.

Repair install of xp:
Boot from the XP cd, and when prompted hit enter to begin setup. Press F8 to
accept the license agreement. It will then search and find your existing XP
install. Select it, and choose R for repair. Back up any important data
files in case something goes wrong.

Hi, Joe.
Here is Microsoft's instructions for an "in-place upgrade":
How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q315341
(Read the steps closely; many users make the mistake of choosing R for
Repair the first time it's offered, but this only repairs the boot-up files,
not the full Windows installation.)
A couple of things to note: This will take just about as long as a clean
install of Windows itself, but should preserve your existing applications
and data - and some of your tweaks. As soon as you get your firewall and
antivirus back in place, go online to Windows Update to get SP1 (if it isn't
included on your WinXP CD-ROM) and all later fixes, including the one from
last July that protects you from the Blaster worm.
This is going to take about half a day, Joe, even if you have broadband to
download the updates. If your CD includes SP1, you might knock an hour off
that.

Is there a link where I can download a full copy of SP1 so I can burn it to
CD?

Search MS KB for service pack and you will find SP1a is available for
download as network installation.
