unwanted desktop icons

Lately IE icons of various ads have been appearing on my
desktiop. How can I stop this , it is quite annoying.

You possibly have a virus or more than likely have spyware:
Run an updated virus scan.
Run Disk Cleanup checking all boxes except "Compress old files"

You can use adaware6 or SpybotSD... They have free versions for download.
These programs will keep gator and xupitor, or any other spyware type
programs off you system/systems.
