View Full Version : Internet Connection Firewall vs. Norton Personal Firewall

I recently acquired a broadband (cable) connection to the internet,
and have been advised to use a firewall.
Is it sufficient to use the Internet Connection Firewall that comes
(free) with Windows XP, or are there significant advantages to Norton
Personal Firewall?

Forget both and get zonealarm. Protects from inbound and outbound
connections and it's free.

Personally, I agree with the advice you got from purplehaz03. But to answer
your question:
Internet Connection Firewall is adequate, but it suffers from two major
limitations: It's not very configurable, and it won't stop your computer
from accessing the internet without your knowledge. Just about any third
party firewall is better. Can't say anything about NPF specifically 'cause I
don't use it. I like Zone Alarm.

Both purp and Farm are correct. ZoneAlarm is considered the best SOFTWARE
firewall out there. Link>>

Thanks for your response.
I have downloaded ZoneAlarm and am trying it.
It looks like just what I need.
I notice that ZoneAlarm appears on my taskbar as a regular open
program, and that when I cycle thru open programs using Alt-Tab, the
Zone Alarm icon appears among those of the other open programs, and
can't be gotten rid of, except by closing ZoneAlarm. I'd like to get
it to just sit all the way on the right side of the tray as a
miniaturized icon, as my other running utilities (e.g., Norton
Antivirus) do. Do you know if this is possible?

I just answered my own question.
There is a "Don't show this again" checkbox in the window that appears
when I click on the large ZoneAlarm icon. When I check this box, the
large icon disappears, and a miniature one remains in the tray, where
it belongs.
Thanks again.
