renaming files

Hi,

I'm wondering how I could fix a problem when I rename multiple files in XP.
When I rename the photos that I took of a family event, I select all then I
right click on the first one and rename it "photo (000).jpg", what happens
then is that the first file is renamed correctly, but the following are
renamed with only the number of digit of their numer: "photo (1).jpg"
instead of "photo (001).jpg", "photo (10).jpg" instead of "photo (010)",
"photo (100).jpg".

What I would like to know is how I can use XP to rename multiple files and
keep the 0 padding in front of the number, because when I view the photos
with any program I see the first two in the proper order but the it jump to
10, 11,... and then 100, 101, ..., so that I would be able to see all the
pictures in the proper order.

You cannot "pad" with 00 when you use this system, you must use (1) or you
can start with any number, but not 00. Even if you try, the second file will
be (2) and not (002).
I don't know the program you are using to view these files, if the files are
listed by names and the names are in the order (1), (2), (3), etc. it cannot
jump from (2) to (10) and then from (11) to (100).
Look in your folder. Where are files (3) and (9) listed?
