Resizing existing partitions

How can I resize my C drive so that I can create new
partitions using XP Home Edition? If this can't be done,
how can I obtain a copy of the Recovery Console so that I
can run 'diskpart.exe' and create several partitions,
before I reinstall XP on one of those partitions. XP
came with my PC so all I have is a recovery disk, which I
don't think allows one to run the Recovery Console
(required to run 'diskpart.exe').

You can purchase and install Partition Magic 8 (www.powerquest.com)
and it will accomplish what you wish to do. XP's DiskPart utility is =
designed
to only work with an empty drive, such as a second hard drive.

You're going to need a third party program like Partition Magic. Chances are
your recovery CD isn't going to let you reinstall to a partition size of
your own choosing. Most of them are an image of the existing drive, and they
recreate the partitions as the machine was shipped.

Using PM you could shrink your existing partition to make room for other
partitions. However, if you ever need to use that recovery disk, having
those extra partitions might not do you any good. It might be a better idea
to install an extra hard drive if the point is to have data on a different
partition.

If you want to see if your recovery disk will allow you to reinstall to a
different sized partition, all you really need is a win98 boot floppy. Use
it to delete the existing partition, create new partitions, then run that
recovery CD. If that works, you won't need Partition Magic.
