I understand that Standby is used when I want to close my
laptop temporary with my windows opened upon "awakening".
However can I program the standby such that it would not
awake by unintentional movements (eg mere moving the
mouse or disconnecting network connections)? Or can I
awake the computer only when I press the Power button or
Sleep button?

1. Check the Properties of the devices in the Device Manager. If a
Power Management tab is found here you can uncheck the "allow" option
to make sure that the device will not interrupt the Standby mode.
2. You may be better of using the Hibernate power save modus.
