View Full Version : CD Won't Eject

I am wondering if this is an XP feature, or if it's a hardware problem - if
I put in a CD-ROM, -R, or -RW and access its contents, everything functions
beautifully. However, it seems that when I attempt to eject the CD, the
computer thinks it's still using it and won't let go - therefore, the CD
drawer will not open. I use the manual eject button on the front of the
machine, and also try using the right-click "EJECT THIS DISK" from the "My
Computer" panel - nothing happens. I have to log off my user account and
log back in to free it up and eject the CD.
I don't think it's a hardware issue, based on the fact that logging off and
logging back on seems to free it up.
My feeling is, I am attempting to eject the CD while the computer is still
accessing it. I am used to Win98 that lets you eject it as long as it's not
actively reading the contents of the CD. My mistake. However, is there a
setting I can change, or something I can do, to encourage XP to release the
CD and let the drive eject?
TIA,
Jonny

Is it a TDK driver by chance? They are famous for this, and won't
acknowledge it either. Haven't seen this problem with others (HP, Plextor)
but many times with several TDK drives.

It's actually a Sony drive. It's at home right now (and I'm not) so I am
not sure of the EXACT model, but...
Your feeling is, it's a hardware issue?

What burning software do you have? I had one that would lock the CD drive if
the disk wasn't finalized or safe to use or whatever. That was fine, but
then it went rogue on me and wouldn't spit out any CDs unless I rebooted.
Could be a similar issue,

It is NTI CDmaker, bundled with the machine when purchased. However, when
burning, I usually use the interface in Windows Explorer - which I think is
based on a Roxio engine.

If the CD won't eject, try opening MY COMPUTER, right click
on the CD drive and there should be an "eject" option on the
menu.

Have seen that problem on Sound Blaster models as well.

One other item you might try is to see if there's an updated driver for that
particular model. Check out the manufacturers website, sometimes they have
drivers that they recommend over the standard drivers that come with
Microsoft OS'es.
Also, contact the tech support department at the manufacturer. I've not had
much success with this issue except one time while talking to Sound Blaster
reps about defective DVD drives. They kept saying there were no defects and
I kept asking them why and what else could we do to fix the problems, they
ran out of suggestions and finally while talking to management, management
admitted the problem was a known issue but employees were not allowed to
speak about it.
