View Full Version : Question about mutiple user accounts

Can someone help me? I've been running 98 for years and my new computer has
XP. I have 4 user accounts set up for the family and when I download or
install something new, I find that not all the programs will be available to
all the users. I know that there is a shared folder that you can put
programs in to share. Is there any setting somewhere that I can do to make
available all programs to all users and share anything downloaded like music
or plug in's to the media player. I downloaded a few plug in's for the
player and they only work in my profile unless I do an install while in
every profile. There must be an easier way. Thanks

If you are running windows xp pro, at the login / welcome screen, press
ctrl+alt+del twice and you will be presented with a text based login prompt.
Login with the user name Administrator and the password you should have with
your computer documentation or whatever you put as the admin password during
windows setup / upgrade.
Install the program or plug in while logged in as administrator and
theoratically everyone else will have access to it.
If you wish to share music and files, go into my computer, then shared
documents. You can store your shared files in here. Everyone else will be
able to store files to share here aswell and access them the same way you
did through my computer > shared documents.

Surely that is only true if everyone has administrator privileges -
not a good idea for a multi-user system? Some programs (usually
utilities and major applications) either automatically install
themselves into "All User" space or give you the choice of doing this
when you first install them. Others, typically older ones and most
games, automatically install themselves in the current user's space.
Often, all you need to do to give other users access to them is to
copy the shortcuts into the other users' program folders or into the
"All Users" program folder.

Programs installed by an administrator should be installed for all users =
(though it can ask). Programs installed by a user should install for =
that user only if it can..

That has not been my experience (unless by "an administrator" you mean
the special administrator account, which I haven't tested). For
various reasons, I normally use an account with full administrator
privileges on my XP Pro system, and generally install software from
that account. I have other accounts: one with administrator privileges
but few startup services which I use for tape backups, and one for my
wife. My experience is as I described - some software installs itself
(with or without asking) so as to be accessible in all accounts, while
other software is only accessible from the account in which it was
installed. In some, but not all, cases, software installed for one
account can be used by finding and double-clicking on the program file
from another account, but it is common for program shortcuts only to
be installed in the installing account's start menu tree.
