thanks Anando.

one more question about notification area: see a lot of 'past items' in
'customize notification area'list, some of which are obviously unreasonable.
what are they for? can i delete them in a whatever way?

Hi,
You are very welcome. Yes those icons can be easily deleted. You can
download an automated edit from Kelly's site.

Remove past items from Notification Area (line 53, left column)

Hi,
These keys are obviouly recreated by Windows but all the past icons are
deleted from the notification area. The edit should work without any
problems. Are you trying to say that the past items remain there as they
were before applying the edit ?

absolutely! that's exactly what i meant. i got these on 'past icons' list
weeks ago like:

1) Yahoo! Mail(5 new messenges)
2) winrar 34% done
3) xp2003.wmv finished
....

and other absurd icons. u can't get rid of them by deleting
"PastIconsStream" and "IconStreams" keys.

they are annoying!

Sam,

Run the reg file again. Once done, Open Task Manager, click the Processes
tab, click Explorer.exe, and then click End Process. In Task Manager, click
File, click New Task, type explorer, and then click OK.

Hi Anando,

No it doesn't, not in this case and many others. The "Past Items" values
are written to the registry as part of the user log off process. This is why
it is necessary to "crash" Explorer, so the system will re-read the new
values, and not retain the old ones that are already in memory.
