Turn on the built-in Firewall for the connectoid in question. It's on
the `Advanced tab`.

I have a router (serving as a hardware firewall) and Zone Alarm (software
firewall). Zone Alarm (www.zonelabs.com) also
offers some protection against popups. I also have Tweak XP from
http://www.totalidea.com/ (which is a 'Swiss Army Knife for XP)
and it also blocks popups and ads, and the user can identify which ones to
stop.

The router should be stopping the pop-up adverts, unless you're
allowing the router to accept and pass through data on ports 135 thru
139 inclusive as well as port 445.

The other option is to turn off the messenger service located under services
in the administrative tools in Control panel.
