View Full Version : XP accounts MISSING! Why?

After going thru START to SETTINGS to CONTROL PANEL
to "USER ACCOUNTS", I receive the following alert:
"The System cannot find the file specified."
I've scanned with Norton A/V and found nothing. What do
I need to do to correct this?

Now this is an odd situation !
What happens when at a cmd prompt you run=20
control userpasswords2
and what if you run=20
compmgmt.msc
??

Let me try that and see what comes of it. Be right back.

After running your first suggestion, these are the
results:
"Users for this computer: User Name <blank>, Group
<Blank>"
There are four accounts, "Brian" (User),"Mommy"
(Admin),"Richard Beers" (Admin), "T34617" (Admin)
After running second suggestion, discovered ... still
looking at this window trying to understand it...

Honestly, I read this info but I can't clearly make sense
of it. Still, the audits and failed audits indicate
something is wrong. The accounts are still missing.
What next?

Sorry - I had to off for the day just then.
So none of the interfaces show any accounts ?
and also at cmd prompt=20
net user=20
I suppose then gives you a blank list ?
But of course if you were to try to add a new user=20
with the same name as one you know exists it will=20
refuse due to already existing account.
I am pretty much at a loss here. What you seem to=20
be facing is pretty unique. Are you sure that your =20
machine is virus free ? as reported by a couple of
up-to-date scanners ?
