My problem is:
On Saturday 3rd 0f May, a completed a 2 word documents
and saved them.
On Sunday the 4th of May I wanted to add to one of them,
I opened MS word, and clicked on open, (the file wasn't
in the recent list as I had worked on other files since).
I opened the folder where the file was kept. The folder
was empty; not just of that file but of the two others
that were in there.
Thinkinf that I may have saved them, or moved them
elsewhere, I used all the various combinations available
in the XP search function to try and locate them.
The folder that these files were in gave me the
information that although it looked empty, there was
infact a file in there 171 kbs large.
Also in folder properties, I noticed that the folder was
READ ONLY. Not thinking this correct, but used to XP
doing things of it's own free will, I attempted to change
this, thinking that this may (somehow) give me back my
three lost files. It didn't, and the folder reverted to
READ ONLY again.
I then went up to the parent folder (My Documents), and
noticed that this was READ ONLY too. I attempted to
change this to not read only, it gave me the usual
comment about how this will affect all sub-folders and
files, if I wanted. I could see no point in all my files
and documents being read only, I need to be able to edit
them. So clicked yes. After a considerable amount of time
doing this, the PC eventually stopped.
When I eventually went back into My Documents some time
later, it was empty, apart from the "Shared Pictures"
file that comes pre-loaded.
I have virus checked with an up to date anti virus
programme (Command Antivirus), and apparently it's clear.
I have used system restore to revert to a previous setup,
I have gone into "Last known good configuration" - it
wouldn't start!
Can you please confirm my stupidity, and then tell me how
I can possibly restore my computer to it's previous
state, or at least how I can get my lost files back?
Thank you
