Nan:

If you go into your email (Outlook Express or, I guess,
MS Outlook), you can go to the following to solve this
Instant Messenger problem:

1. TOOLS
2. OPTIONS
3. PREFERENCES
4. Uncheck the box that asks if you want the Windows
Messenging program to automatically start when you start
Windows. When I had that checked, I would get IM's
trying to sell me things (or worse, offers to see web cam
videos that were probably porn) even when I was not
online because, like you, my connection is always "on"
(DSL, cable, etc.).

Good luck.......unchecking that box should solve your
problem. It did mine.
