View Full Version : XP is slow

When I double click on an icon to start a program, there is about a 2-second
delay before anything happens. When I first got XP everything was faster.
I have defragged and cleared out all the other running programs. My DELL
computer is a 2 GHZ machine and should be lightning fast. What's wrong?

Hi

It may be caused by the 811493 update if you have installed it.

811493 is not working good on a lot of computers (MS is aware of this),
and you should remove it using Add/remove Programs in the Control Panel.

If you get a warning that other installs may stop working if you remove it,
just ignore it.

The 811493 fix is not critical really, it is rated as "Important" only by MS.

More here:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;811493
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-013.asp

e.g. this:
"For an attack to be successful, an attacker would need to be able to logon
interactively to the system, either at the console or through a terminal
session."

How can I tell if I have this. Would it be list in the Add/Remove programs
under Q811493. I have lots of other patches with that same syntax but not
that one.

My thanks to all who so helpfully responded. Removing update 811493 did
indeed result in a noticeable speedup.

Thanks for this. I'd got as far as figuring out it must be a recent
download...Update now deleted and speed almost back to normal.
