View Full Version : Can Common Dialogs Remember the View and Arrange by?

Hi everyone,
I tried to customize this for couple hours last night and I couldn't find
any help on the web so hope somebody can help.
I would like to make common dialogs like Save as and Open etc to remember
the view I set them on. I have Tweak UI and I was able to customize the
dialogs to have shortcuts to my favorite foilders on the side but, for
example, when I want to send an attachment using Outlook Express or
Messenger I would like the view to be arranged by last modified so I can
find it quicky. Also, would like the dialog to remember the last folder I
was in so I don't have to find it everytime. I'm sure that there is the way
to do this, in Win 2000 this worked well, but I don't know how I got it
there. Also, I hear that there is a way to actually resize the common
dialogs to make them larger, would be very useful for My Pictures folder
cause the view is Thumbnails anyway so more space would be great. Does
anybody know about that?
The second thing I need help with is that I used to show full filenames with
extensions and now I sent it to hide full filenames, but the issue came up
in Save as dialog that when I scan pictures and try to save them for
example, the dialog remembers the old names and completes my entry but WITH
file extension. This bothers me as it would be easier when trying to name a
picture to just go to the end of the remembered file name and add a number
and not have to delete the file extension first. For example, vacation ->
vacation2 hit save and not vacation.jpg -> delete .jpg -> add 2
vacation2.jpg and then save
Hope this is a clear description and hope that somebody can help!
All the best,
Igor

No, these windows cannot be set to a specific view for the dialog screens.
Sorry.

First of all , thanks for quick reply. I guess logical question is how come
that I can do this in win 2000 and not in XP. It seems that win2000
remembers the setting after the file is saved... Are there any programs that
can be downloaded do this? I'm sure I seen some newsgroups discussing making
bigger dialogs...
Thanks again

Igor, some programs, such as Word have internal controls that allow some
customizing but it applies to that program only as it uses its own common
dialog boxes. The setting for the common dialog box in general is hard coded
and not configurable. I don't know of any program available that can change
this.

Hi Igor,
As per #1.
To get the view and last opened/used setting to remain, the folder path
can't be layered. As in, if you wanted Igor's Mail Folder to remain in
List/Detail view and be open upon the next save as, it has to read as
follows: F:\Igor's Mail. It can't be: F:\Document and
Settings\Igor\Igor's Mail. Also, it can not have subfolders.
To work around that, create a new folder under which ever letter drive (can
be on another partition/drive), do a copy and paste of the files wanted in
said folder and then either add the folder and path name using TweakUI or
you can manually add it here:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Pol icies\comdlg32\Placesbar
For My Pictures, the best I can suggest at this time would be to reduce the
size of thumbnails, thus allowing more to be shown in the window size given.
Again, either use TweakUI to do that or change it manually here:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre nt
Version\Explorer] "ThumbnailSize"=dword:00000020
BTW, both edits can be found on my Tweaks Page - Common Dialog script and
Change Thumbnail View Size. Line 118 and 120.

As per #2:
Not really sure which settings you have toyed with, but what you are asking
for is the behavior I already see.
