Starting system in MS DOS

[Luddite]

Despite being something of a Luddite have managed to get
my new machine with Windows XP as the operating system
onto Internet etc. Have also partioned the HD (using
Partion Magic V8) so that I would be able to run Windows
98 on the other side ( reasons not relevant) but when
attempting to install using the Command Prompt option
from inside XP keep getting a message to say I must shut
down XP fist....great but cannot find out how!!!
alternative of starting at MS DOS also eludes....any help
available for a somewhat mature user!!!
