Please tell me how to turn off windows messenger. I do
not use it, and I am getting alot of pop-up ( pop-over)
messages from advertisers.

Hi,
Type SERVICES.MSC at Start>Run and scroll down to the "Messenger" service.
Right click on it and select properties and choose "Disabled" under startup
type.

This will disable the messenger service (it has got nothing to do with
Windows Messenger) and you should not get any pop-up ads after this.

You can turn off the Messenger service, but what you really need to do is
enable the XP Firewall. This will prevent these types of intrusions.
Messenger is just a symptom of a very wide open system that can be easily
accessed by other even more malicious and destructive programs.

Open Control Panel/Network Connections. Right click the connection you use
and select Properties/Advanced tab. Select the option to enable the
firewall.
