View Full Version : transfer of OS

I've installed a new harddrive and wish to transfer my
operating system to the new drive. I have been
unsuccessful in getting the computer to boot after using
Wester Digital's drive image sofware. (Data Lifeguard
tools V 10.0) I've tried rewriting the boot sector with
the recovery console and it still starts up normally,
shows the XP Professional logo, but automatically restarts
without an error msg prior to the login screen. As best
as I can tell, when I boot in safe mode, before it
restarts I see the partition information... rdisk(0), mdisk
(0), fdisk(0), partition (1) and then the file it is
trying to load. I assume that something in the boot.ini
or other startup files did not copy properly using the WD
software.

Is there a way to do a fresh install to the new drive, and
then transfer a backed up copy from my old drive. I would
like to retain my current settings and layout. If I must,
I can re-install everything, although that is a time
consuming process. Any help would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks.

At this point you could try an upgrade install=20
of the OS, but you would need to reapply all=20
service afterwards (sp1 if the CD does not have=20
it integrated, and then all security updates, etc.)

You can make a backup that includes System=20
State and then restore this on top of a fresh=20
install.

Or, as mentioned, use other imaging software.
