View Full Version : Unwanted recurring Security message in Outlook

I am in a small office with 12 computers connected to a
server. We have Norton Anti-virus installed. Our
software support person cannot understand why this message
appears, nor can he figure out how to stop it. He
believes the Norton anti-virus is doing its work, so there
is no reason for this message to keep appearing. I am the
only one who gets this constantly recurring message when
my Outlook is open:
'A program is trying to access email addresses you have
stored in Outlook. Do you want to allow this?
If this is unexpected, it may be a virus and you should
check 'no.'
Does anyone have any clues?

This is a security feature of Outlook and indicates that something besides
Outlook is attempting to access your Address book (either your local one or
your Exchange Global Address List if you are on an Exchange server). This
was put into place to combat viruses that email themselves to all your
contacts. It can also be triggered by software that synchronizes your
contacts with a PDA, applications that automatically send email, or
generally anything that might be connected to your Outlook contacts. Are
you using anything that might fit the bill? Have you installed any third
party Outlook plug-ins, or anything else that your co-workers are not using?
If not, you may try updating your virus signatures (very important to keep
these current!) and doing a manual full system scan. You could also try the
"emergency scan" that many vendors offer. This usually involves booting off
of a CD or a floppy disk before scanning to ensure that no viruses that
might interfere with the scan are running while the scan is taking place.
