View Full Version : XP to go on 2nd HDD Setup/Partition ?s

April 23rd 03, 02:40 AM
I have a Dell desktop (866 MHz, 512 MB, 40 GB single partition ME) and
wish to add a second 60 GB HDD as the primary slave and install XP there
for a dual boot. I have run the upgrade advisor and obtained all(?) the
necessary updates. I have read and will reread and print out the MS
guide for installation as well as two others that I found on 'MVP'
sites. I have been advised that my DELL ME recovery disk will suffice as
validation and have a 98 Upgrade and my original 95 CD as back up. So I
plan a clean install of XP on the second 'virgin' HDD. I plan to use the
built-in facility on the XP CD to partition the second drive and
Partition Magic 8.0 to do the original (ME) drive.

A few questions please:

Am I correct in assuming that the XP CD will give me the option to
choose BD1 (primary slave) as the installation point and automatically
assign 'D' to the OS partition there thus moving my current DVD and
CD-writer from 'D' and 'E' to 'E' and 'F' ?

If I choose to format the master prior to installing the slave
could/should I leave 'D' and 'E' as is, skip 'F' and letter my extended
partitions starting with 'G' ? (This would be best in my mind as my old
Gateway is 'C' as Master, 'D' as slave, 'E' as CD and 'F' as Zip; so
there would be continuity.) When I setup the slave I would start the
extended partitions at, lets say 'L'.

One more for now, please. I am a home user (word processor, web surfing
and email, personal web page and play with Excel, PowerPoint, a simple
CAD program and various shareware) with current 'My Documents' folder
being 1.5 GB and 'Program Files' being 3 GB. That being said does this
partitioning the Master 40 GB (ME) drive seem reasonable.
Primary - 8 GB - OS, hardware apps and most used programs.
Extended - 2 GB - Swap file
- 14 GB - other programs and play zone
- 6 GB - Data
- 8 GB - Back up or image of slave
The slave would be of similar proportions with the master back up on it.

I apologize for the length but these are questions that I have not been
able to find definitive answers to on the Internet.

TIA for any help.

1) A recovery CD will not serve as proof of eligibility. You'll have to
use the 98 CD.

2) When creating a dual boot setup, XP should set the drive letter as D for
the second drive/partition, but things like ZIP drives can cause problems
with this. Since you already have Me installed on C, you shouldn't have any
problems. And yes, as part of setup, choose a Custom installation and
specify that you want to choose the installation location.

3) If you format the current C: drive and do a clean install of XP there, it
will still be C:. The partitions on the slave drive will get the next drive
letters and then the CD/DVD drives. However, XP has the ability, via Disk
Management, to reassign drive letters for everything but the boot and system
drive.

As for your partitioning layout, you may find that 8 gig is a bit small for
what you want to do. There is nothing stopping you from pointing a
program's installer to the 14 gig partition and installing there if you find
you're running short of space. And the 8 gig partition for backup or
imaging of the 60 gig slave probably wouldn't prove adequate for an image,
but might work for backup, depending on how much you wanted to backup.

Thank you for your reply. I got my information on the recovery disk from
http://www.aumha.org/a/xpupgrad.htm and bought the XP upgrade from DELL.
I will have my 98 CD 'primed and ready though.

I intended to say: If I partition C: prior to... My mistake.

Thank you again for your assistance, I will do some more homework before
