View Full Version : Disabling "Auto action" pop-up when inserting CD's

Hello all:

Tried looking for this in the KB - no luck...

Is there a way to disable the "Windows can perform the same action...."
pop-up window when inserting CD's with audio or graphic files on them? I
tried selecting "Take no action", and checking the "Always do selected
action" checkbox, but WinXP doesn't seem to pay any attention to this
setting.

I'm starting to rip my entire CD collection, and I really don't want to deal
with this window every time I pop in a new audio CD. :)

Thanks in advance!!

Hi Rob,
You can try to disable AutoRun on the selected drive through TweakUI. Under
TweakUI go to the My Computer>AutoPlay>Drives section and uncheck the drive
you want to disable AutoPlay on.

I thought about doing this, but I was thinking of keeping
it as a "last resort", since that would also disable
AutoRun on legitamite AutoRun-enabled CD's. Not the end
of the world, I know, but I'm hoping that I don't have to
give that up just so XP doesn't spam me when I pop in an
audio CD.

Anyone have any other ideas? I would almost consider
this an XP bug, since the window does have the "Always
perform the selected action" checkbox, which you would
think would suppress this window, at least for future
CD's of the same type.

BTW - I am running SP1...

Thanks again!

Well, whaddya know, it looks like I found an answer, thanks to Avando's
lead.

For anyone that's interested. I downlaoded TweakUI and took a look. In the
"My Computer\AutoPlay" tree, there's a "Handlers" option. If you don't want
to be bothered by this anymore, go in there, and edit heach handler,
disabling all the options under "Supported Media".

Now, AutoRun scripts should still work for installers and the like, but you
won't get prompted for actions anymore when entering audio or picture CD's.

Thanks, Avando!
Rob
