Q817287:Critical Update (Catalog Database Corruption in
Microsoft Windows XP) This update presents itself
everyday. I go ahead and install it but it will show up
again the next day. Something is corrupt.

Go to the Control Panel and open up System. On the System Properties page
select the Automatic Updates tab. Unselect the check box to Keep my computer
up to date and select apply. Now check the checkbox to Keep my computer up
to date and select apply.

This resets the Automatic Updates service. There is a known issue that
relates to declining one of the updates in the list of updates that AU
presents as ready to be installed.
