Does anyone know how It can connect both my Laptop and
Desktop together so that I am able to share files between
both computers? Do I need to go through my cable
router? Please help!

file sharing must be enabled on both machines for the folders you want to
use to swap files. You can enable file sharing on the main drive as a whole
if you want to. When connecting to the net I always disable file sharing.

If you have a router, it's easy. Hook up both computers to the router, run
the router software. Run the network setup wizard on both systems. Right
click on any file, folder, printer or disk that you want to share and select
Sharing and Security. Share the file and that's it.
