î (alt-140) now changes or closes a window and â (alt-131) is invalid so
what's actually left? Can I download a valid ASCII char set for XP and
where?

Thank you Mary but my concern is with the Microsoft XP operating system
specifically! It will not let me type in some character's ASCII value to get
the symbol! Like î(140) & â(131)!
How do I make those on XP? In fact which of the 255 ASCII codes are able to
be entered to gain the relevant symbol? I have old DOS ASCII character
charts and I found that Windows <=2000 only accept 2/3 of them and those are
different in Word compared with if used in a file or folder name. XP seems
to be even more restrictive and I would like to know to what extent please,
thank you.

Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Character Map seems
to work for me. I just double-click the character I want in the font I
want, then click "Copy", go to the document and click "Paste".

Thanks Brian Tillman but one of the reason for being able to ALT-??? is to
be able to instigate my own rendition of a unique timestamp or MOM (Moment
Of Madness)! î200308221325. Hard to do on XP if you have to go thru >
Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Character Map just
to put the MOM on something like this newsmail eh? If I knew which
characters I could create by ALT-??? then I could change the moniker (î) to
whatever is appropriate and possible. I do not own XP myself so cannot ALT
the entire 255 chars to discover for myself but would like to set a MOM
standard format for the future. I thought I had but MS keeps taking the
chars away to do other jobs. Very confusing AND frustrating!

Good idea Brian I hope it does work and if so will use this format myself,
thanks again.
