View Full Version : LDM not NTFS!

JCW
April 23rd 03, 05:06 AM
I just installed a new Western Digital 80 gig HD and I noticed in system
information the partition type is listed as LDM instead of NTFS. Can someone
tell me this means and how do I set the file system to NTFS? Thanks
JCW

Hi JCW,

"LDM" is probably another filesystem which Windows apparently support, but i
couldnt find it at google.

To Convert a harddrive to NTFS:
goto command promt (Start menu - All Programs - Accesories - Command promt)
and use this syntax:
convert drive_letter: /fs:ntfs
Convert is the command file. "drive letter is the letter of the harddrive
you want to convert.
/fs stands for filesystem and NTFS (NT Filesystem) selects that i shall be
converted for ntfs.
Example: convert C: /fs:ntfs

* WARNING *
After convertion of the filesystem to NTFS you wont be able to boot up on a
normal DOS Bootdisk.
For bootin on an NTFS drive in dos download the program "NTFS Reader for DOS
" (from ntfs.co,/products.htm), and create the 2-3 bootdisks.

Is the drive dynamic? Can you access the drive? You could reformat the
partition to NTFS.

OK, But using format from disk management it doesn't give the option to
chose NTFS. Should I do it a different way? I appreciate your advise.

JCW
I can access the drive and I don't know if it is dynamic.

NTFS is the only option on partitions larger than 32G.

However, before going any further go here
ftp://ftp.powerquest.com/pub/utilities/ and download partinnt.zip. Extract
partinnt.exe and run it. At the bottom of the display is a button labled
copy to clipboard. Hit that then paste the contents back here.

OK. It's basically garbage. Just use the disk management snap in tool to
partition then format the drive. The current partition type makes it a
possible Win2K dynamic extended partition, but since the drive is new to you
that would be meaningless to you.

Seems strange that WD would be shipping drives like this unless it's a
remanufactured/refurbished drive.

From the sound of it, you've already seen it. :-)

Start->run->diskmgmt.msc is one way of getting there.
Control panel->administration tools->computer management->disk management is
another way of getting there.

I generally use 3rd party partition management so I'll have to wing it a bit
based on what I see on my main machine. Right click the drive and you should
see the option to partition the drive. Take that. Once partitioned, right
click again and you should be able to format. If format doesn't give you the
option to mount the drive, simply right click it again and take the change
drive letter option.

From the sound of it, you've already seen it. :-)

Start->run->diskmgmt.msc is one way of getting there.
Control panel->administration tools->computer management->disk management is
another way of getting there.

I generally use 3rd party partition management so I'll have to wing it a bit
based on what I see on my main machine. Right click the drive and you should
see the option to partition the drive. Take that. Once partitioned, right
click again and you should be able to format. If format doesn't give you the
option to mount the drive, simply right click it again and take the change
drive letter option.

Formatting the drive will give you the option to choose the file system. I
am not used to reading that report but it looks like you have a basic and a
dynamic volume on the machine. Whats your disk admin say for the drives?
