View Full Version : Microsoft XP Compatability

Just bought a computer over the weekend with Windows XP
installed. Always believed that Microsoft software
products would read files from earlier software programs
but am finding that isn't true. I have many files on
floppies that were created from my old machine (Windows
98 and Office) that I can not access. Question: Is there
another program like Windows XP Office or others that I
can install so my new computer will read the old files?
Please offer any suggestions that will help. Thought I
would be computing today but find myself dead in the
water. The old machine broke down so I decided to
upgrade computers but didn't understand the problems I
would encounter.
Thanks

If your old files were created with Microsoft Office, you need
Microsoft Office on the new computer.
Not all computer manufacturers choose to include Microsoft Office or
any Office components.

If he doesn't have MS Office on the new PC, Microsoft offers free Office
readers, or he can do a search in google for OpenOffice.

I don't think it's a matter of the manufacturer "choosing" to including
Office or not, rather the owner of the new PC choosing to buy Office along
with it or not.

Many people expect parts of Office, especially Microsoft Word simply
because every computer they have previously bought has come with it.
Now more computers are cutting that corner in the quest for the
cheapest price.
Word and others are not included by default like it used to be.
Often the buyer does not choose that option because they are not truly
aware and informed.

Umm, Yes. Install Office XP ( or any office product from 97 on up )
They don't come with the OS.

Maybe so, I was just pointing out that people *shouldn't* expect to have any
Office component preinstalled as a freebie. If they do, then they've been
misinformed and mislead.
