View Full Version : problems with taskbar

Skip G
July 14th 03, 11:14 PM
I was attempting to change the view of my taskbar to add
more shortcuts to my Quicklauch toolbar.
I right-clicked the taskbar, and using the toolbar
functions, attempted to add the quicklauch and desktop
tool bars. I then tried to re-size the toolbars by
sliding the dividers back and forth
to maximize the space available to show open & minimized
programs. I then noticed that the
active windows were no longer showing on the taskbar. I
have several icons in my "Quick Launch"
toolbar and I can no longer slide that toolbar to the
left and hide particular Icons. It's all or nothing.
When I removed the "quicklaunch" toolbar, the whole
taskbar dissappeared and became irretrievable. I was
able to access the taskbar properties through the control
Panel and re-add the quicklaunch toolbar so
I could access the taskbar again. I have tried re-
booting, but no luck. I've tried adding, removing, and
moving different toolbars around the task bar, but the
task bar will only appear when I have at least one
toolbar checked (Address, Links, Language Bar, Desktop,
quicklaunch). If no toolbars are checked, the whole
taskbar still dissappears, and I cannot view my power
status, start-up programs, system clock, startmenu, etc.
I tried removing all the icons from the Quick-launch
toolbar, in case it was just over-loaded and that was
causing problems... I also removed the power
status symbol, but still no luck. Like I said, If I
remove the Quicklaunch toolbar, the whole taskbar will
dissappear (the same goes for any other toolbar).

Right now I'm looking at my start menu button, the empty
quick-launch toolbar space, and my start-up programs and
system clock. I cannot see any active window buttons.

How can I fix this, so the taskbar will behave properly
again, and so I can see the windows that are open, or
minimized, as well as my special toolbars (desktop,
quicklaunch)?

I really don't think I did anything peculiar to cause
this to happen. Any advice?

This really isn't like me.. I usually have no problems
with simple windows tasks like these.

Thanks for your help.

I'm not that technical... more of a novice actually.

Could you give a little more instruction? Sorry...=20

Hi Skip,

Do me a favor? Send me a couple of screenshots of this via e-mail. And
after doing so, go to Start/Run and type in: regsvr32 /i shell32

Also, when you right click the Taskbar/Properties, is Auto-Hide checked? We
can work on the edit after.

Bad news, kelly,

I updated the registry using your tweaks line 240 and=20
restarted the XP. The problem persists. I also=20
validated the double words you added in registry and they=20
sure are there. So far, I am still seeing no active or=20
minimized programs and the Quick Launch is not sizeable.

Now I know I am not the only one who has the problem it=20
makes me feel better. At least I know I did not trigger=20
it by some mistakes.

Any further helps are very appreciated.

Ed

p.s. Sorry, Skip, I am writing on your entry here. You=20
and I are on the same boat now...

Can you send me a screenshot.

Can you also say what are all the other entries near where those dwords =
are (I presume you mean under the policy key).

Also the policies can appear in an different branch of the registry =
Substitute
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE for HKEY_CURRENT_USER and look there as well.

Also tell me what is at these locations

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\Bro=

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Explorer Bars

Hi Ed,

In addition to Davids requests (we are working on this together) could you
also send me screenshots via e-mail of the Taskbar appearance and one of
when you right click the Taskbar/Toolbars expanded. Is Windows Media Player
listed there?

Hi Kelly,

The problem Skip having is identical to my problem. I am
going to run your tweaks to my registry as well. Will
let you know the results.

Thanks,
Ed

Hi Ed,

How very interesting! I did notice the barsize difference between the good
and the bad. Thanks for sending all of that by the way. You mentioned that
it is with only one profile and the import corrupted both. What are the
differences that you can think of between the two users (good and bad)?

Quick questions: Are you using skins? And are the two profiles running the
same theme?

Your feedback is the most comprehensive lead thus far. I also received a
..doc file that was better than a 1,000 words. :o)

Am working five cases at the moment. David and I should have it all wrapped
up soon.

Thanks again,
Kelly

Thanks Kelly,

The bad one is the one profile I normally use. I rarely=20
log into the "good" userid. So the good one stays as=20
almost like when I first build up the XP. In the "bad"=20
one, I first noticed the problem when there were two bars=20
right after the Launch bar and when I resize them they=20
seem all got confused. After I reboot the system, both=20
bars were gone and I windup with no bars at all now. =20
That is I can not resize the Launch bar any more. It=20
seems become infinite length and pushed the Program list=20
section out of the screen. That was the reason I played=20
the Barsize parameter in Registry hoping to put the bar=20
back.

To answer your questions -

1. Nope, I don't use skins. Did it about two years ago=20
and did not like it so removed since then.
2. They don't use same schemes. But They are like that=20
before I had troubles. I did, by the way, go to the=20
display property reset the screen size, the theme, the=20
screen saver hoping to force XP rebuild by taskbar. All=20
of attempts failed with no results.

Thanks for spending so much time for me. It is very=20
appreciated.

Best Regards,
Ed

Hi Ed,

Thought of you yesterday. I compared the files once again and noticed the
difference in Media Band between the good and the bad keys. And have been
collecting Update keys.

For now it seems to boil down to: 818043, 817778 and 819696 (networking and
DX9). The good news is that of the nine cases I am working three are fixed
and another is removing the three updates. Haven't heard back from him yet.

Run the update on line 240: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Once done right click the Notification Area/Task Manager/Processes.

Do not reboot or logoff. Highlight Explorer.exe, End Process. Leave the
Task Manager open. Once your taskbar again reappears chose File/New Task
and type in: Explorer.exe.

Also, for one other, he wasn't able to move the glider over toward the right
but he was able to double click it to get the taskbar working again.

Let me know how it goes and good luck.

Hi Kelly,

I read the KB artical 819696 and seem remember that I did=20
just install the DX9 recently. Don't remember how long=20
after I installed and the task bar problem occured.

Are other guys who have the same problem also installed=20
the DX9 recently?

I thought I pass this information just in case you need=20
it. Hope that helps,

Thanks again,
Ed

Great news, Ed!!! Thank you, for all of your help and sticking this out
with me. Is really hard to troubleshoot something that I can't re-create.
And trust me, I tried to. :o)

As per your second note: Yes, all nine cases had the DX9 update. I would
have to go back and compare more keys, but this is great news, Ed. :o)

There is an Issue with the Windows XP Taskbar, which I have described in
some detail in a Report to Microsoft - but they seem to have something
better to worry about.

I had to:
Use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard to save my settings to HDD
Create a NEW USER for myself (Admin)
Log in as the NEW USER
Use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard to restore my settings
Check the NEW USER Taskbar - Icons were ok.
Delete my OLD USER account!

Hope this helps,

There is an Issue with the Windows XP Taskbar that sees it "lose" the
Program Icons.

Go to http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm .

You will see a page with 2 Columns and Line Numbers at the Left.

On Line 240 in the Left Column, you will see "Programs Aren't Minimised in
the Taskbar".

Click these words to download (and save to your HDD) "xp_taskbarnomin.vbs".

Locate this script on your HDD, and double-click to execute it.

(If your Security/AntiVirus Software issues a warning, allow the Script to
execute.)

This should fix the problem.

Hope this helps,

There is an Issue with the Windows XP Taskbar that sees it "lose" the
Program Icons.

Go to http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm .

You will see a page with 2 Columns and Line Numbers at the Left.

Hi Robert,

240 should have corrected the issue. The script has been updated to include
ending process on Explorer.exe. If that doesn't seem to be working for you,
run the script again then:

Do not reboot or logoff. Once the edit is merged, right click the
Notification Area/Task Manager/Processes. Highlight Explorer.exe, End
Process.

Leave the Task Manager open. Once the process has ended, choose File/New
Task and type in: Explorer.exe.

If still no joy - run this edit: This one is just a tad bit different.

Restore Taskbar to Default Functionality (Line 164)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Note: Do not reboot or logoff. Once the edit is merged, right click the
Notification Area/Task Manager/Processes. Highlight Explorer.exe, End
Process.

Leave the Task Manager open. Once the process has ended, choose File/New
Task and type in: Explorer.exe.

Good luck, Robert.

Hi There,

I am having the same problem. I have checked and other
acounts on the same machine are fine. Just no luck in the
one I use.

I have done a rollback to a restore point a couple of days
ago (it - no joy.

I have tried tweak 240 on http://www.kellys-korner-
xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm and restarted .

Again - no joy.

If you can give me some pointers on how to fix this I
would appreciate it.

Thanks

R
