View Full Version : Elimate Right-Click Junk

July 15th 03, 04:52 AM
I opened an .ace archive. Now, my right-click button gives me three
options for dealing wth .ace files. I don't want that stuff in my
right-click menu. How do I get it out of there?

It depends on where in the right click menu.

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\OpenWithList
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\ContextMenuHan dlers
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shellex\ContextMenuHandler s
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shellex\ContextMenuHandle rs

Thanks -- I looked in all of those. Nothing.
When I right-click, I see OPEN, --- Find -- and then three extensions for
the ace application. then the first section-divider line. I tried
searching in regedit for .ace but nothing happened there, either.

Question: Why do programs put junk in the right-click menu without asking?

Question: In the future, is there something I should look for to prevent a
program from doing that? Is it referred to as a "shell handler" or "shell
extension" or what?

Hi,

If it is on the context menu, that is where you will find it in the
registry. The .ace extension would be listed here: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
And will list the OpenWithList. Check here:

You can also go to a specific File extension (example:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.ace\ShellNew) and right click on the ShellNew key and
select Delete, if the item shows up in the New context menu.

Well -- I guess the program doesn't put ".ace" in the registry -- I can only
find entries with {09799AFB-AD67-11d1-ABCD-00C04FC30936} and such --

Question: How do I identify which program
{09799AFB-AD67-11d1-ABCD-00C04FC30936} refers to? It it refers to Ace, then
I can delete that key/data from the shell context entries.

Hi,

That key default value data is: Open With Context Menu Handler. I've
already given you where to look that pertains to the same. Good luck!

HKEY_CURRENT_ROOT\<whatever the number is>\InProcServer32\

This will tell you the file it is in. Right click the file and view it's =
version information. Note it can be (but probably isn't) something other =
than inprocserver32 but will have the server word in it.
