Are you referring to the buttons in the Quick Launch bar or the buttons
corresponding to open programs?
If it's the former, do the following:
- verify the taskbar is unlocked (right-click the clock and make sure "Lock
the taskbar" is unchecked
- right-click on the small bar on the left side of the Quick Launch bar, or
right-click an empty area of the Quick Launch bar
- uncheck "Show Text"
If it's the latter, there isn't really a way to just shut this off. As more
buttons appear on the taskbar, the buttons will automatically shrink. (If
you really wanted only icons, you could dock your taskbar vertically and
resize it until you see only icons. However, I imagine this isn't what you
really wanted.)
May I ask why you want to do this?

Actually, I prefer icon only task buttons to appear in the taskbar for the
programs that are running. The names actually take more space than I liked.
However, to the OP, I use litestep to replace the explorer shell and you can get
your tasks displayed in icon only mode (takes some configuration on your part
but litestep has lots of info that'll really help). For the MS poster, perhaps
you can pass on the suggestion to the OS design team so it can be built into the
explorer shell?
