Problem with log off or shutdown

Dear All,

I have problem with log off, shut down or restart the
system after finish using the system.

If I click "Start -> Log off", it does not log me off. It
just remains on the desktop windows as if ignoring
my "log off" command.

If I click "Start -> shutdown",it gives me the
option "Stand by, Turn off or Restart. Nothing happens if
I choose "Turn off" or "Restart".

The only way to get around the problem with log off or
shutdown is to do "Ctrl+Alt+delete", under the
tab "Users", it displays the current user and gives you
the option either to "disconnect" or "Logoff". If I
choose logoff, it works OK.

I have downloaded all windows updates and have installed
them all. But the problem does not go away.

I am most grateful if someone can advise me how to fix
this problem please.
