View Full Version : Paint crashes on opening

For the last few weeks whenever I try to open MS Paint it
refuses to open and an error message comes up
saying "Paint has encoutered a problem and needs to
close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. If you were in
the middle of something, the infofrmation you were
working on might be lost. Please tell Microsoft about
this problem." I keep reporting the error, but get
nothing from Microsoft that might fix it.

Any suggestions - System Restore hasn't worked, there's
nothing in the Knowledge Base and I see somone else
reported the same problem a couple of months back in a
newsgroup but there's been no response. Since my machine
came with a manufacturer's backup CD rather than a
Windows XP CD I'm reluctant to reinstall the entire
contents of my hard drive over this thing if I can avoid
it.

Try this - go into Control Panel then Add/Remove programs and then into
Add/Remove Windows components. Highlight Accessories and Utilities and
click on 'details'. Highlight Accessories and click on details and scroll
down to 'paint'. Uncheck 'paint' and then OK and follow the uninstall
instructions for Paint. Reboot and then repeat the above and re-check
'Paint' to reinstall it - You will probably be prompted to insert your WINXP
CD-ROM during this process.

Hope this helps

Hi,

This fix usually works:

Close any/all instances of MSPaint. Then start/run regedit, navigate to this
key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre nt Version\Applets\Paint

Hightlight (click on it) that key and delete it. Close the registry editor
and reopen Paint.
