I know that's as basic as it gets but since I upgraded to
XP I can no longer format my CDs so they can be used as
back up disks.

Open XP's "Help and Support" and type: ERASE , and hit enter.
Then click on "Erase files from a CD".

Actually, formatting a CD is specific to CDs being prepped for packet
writing as in dragging and dropping files directly to disk or saving files
directly to disk and this is not a function supported natively in XP. For
that, you need third party software such as the Direct CD component of Easy
CD Creator, www.roxio.com or the InCD component of Nero, www.nero.com.

If you wish to format for the purpose listed above and you wish to acquire
one of the above applications or some other application that supports this
function, be sure to purchase a version that is compatible with XP and with
your CD Writer. All such information can usually be obtained from the
software web site.
