View Full Version : Notification area Icons disappear
Roy Hamilton
December 5th 03, 08:23 PM
Seemingly at random, the icons in the notification area of
the taskbar will disappear. Certain ones (Zone Alarm,
Norton Antivirus and more) seem to be there all of the
time but others will disappear on a whim. I would like to
have about 10 icons in this area. I have already gone
to "Properties", "Customize Notification" and, even though
I mark several items as "always show", they don't. Any
ideas?
Thanks,
Roy

If your graphics card shares memory with main system memory, this might be
the cause. Check your documentation to see if your card has it's own memory
or if it shares with the system.

I'm afraid I'm not technically adept enough to know the
answer to that without being directed to it. If it helps,
the Dell packing slip shows "32MB NVIDIA GeForce2 MX 4X
AGP Graphics Card with TV-OUT". It's a Dell Dimension
8100 series.
Thanks,
Roy

Generally, the card that you describe does not share memory but has it's own
memory though you might want to check with Dell specifically about this.
Assuming Dell informs you the card has its own memory, the next thing to do
would be to run a virus scan. Be sure your antivirus software has the
latest virus definitions before you scan.
Beyond that, XP is very memory intensive when it comes to graphics. A 32MB
card as you describe is on the low side. In that regard, with XP in full
graphical mode, depending upon what you are doing, you may be putting a
strain on the card and even though you are not sharing memory, it may be
enough of a strain that the system compensates in ways that you describe.
Something else to check, it's possible there is some error in the system at
the time this happens. Check Event Viewer. Open Control Panel, open
Administrative Tools, open Event Viewer, look for errors that correspond to
the time when this issue appears, double click the error, the information
contained within may give a clue as to the source of the problem.
